BHRC RULE UPDATE – Omeprazole & Ranitidine

The BHRC have permitted Omeprazole and Ranitidine as treatment for Gastric Ulcers since 2012. As with other racing jurisdictions there is a withdrawal period applicable which is set at three days prior to competition under BHRC.
This issue has been clarified in BHRC rules and regulations at section Y19[b]:
Y19. [b] Omeprazole and Ranitidine are permitted as gastric ulcer medication provided that the BHRC are notified in writing by a Veterinary Surgeon of the prescription, the treatment is recorded in the horses passport and treatment is withdrawn three (3) clear days prior to competition. Such horses will be recorded on the racecard with ‘(OR)’ as a suffix.
