It is with much sadness that the BHRC recently learned of the death of Mr Vince Shields on the 26th of August. Although a great fan of winter national hunt racing at Carlisle racecourse his real passion was harness racing. As a bookmaker on the northern grass circuit he became a legendary figure with the chalk. Throughout the halcyon days of KENDAL RACEWAY he rarely missed a fixture and it was here his daughter Cathy developed her love for the sport. Over the years Vince took great pride in his daughters achievements and followed her horses closely. Henry Lobell, Avalon After Eight, Avalon Dreamaker, Playwiththedream and Saunders Honey were just a few of the horses in their stable over the years. Vince was one of the great characters of the game and will be sadly missed by all. His funeral will take place at St Bedes Church, 120 Wigton Rd, Carlisle, CA2 7DS 1pm Tuesday 6th of September.
